Studying the Word of God, With Humility.

Prayer before Bible study is the greatest tool we have. This will connect us to God through Christ Jesus, and where we receive the Holy Spirit at our asking within the prayer.

We should search the Scriptures with a longing desire to embrace the will of God, our Father which is in Heaven, with humility; Just as our Saviour Jesus Christ had done. We should never search the Scriptures to exalt, magnify or elevate ourselves.

Jesus said, “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” John 5:30

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21

In Luke 18:10-14 it reads, “Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. “

The Pharisee in the above Scripture in Luke, knew the Word of God. We get this understanding from the things the pharisee knew he had to do, the things that was written in the law of God. Yet, he uses the Word to exalt, magnify, and elevate himself. He is even trying to tell God in his own prayer how great he, himself is. Such a prayer God does not respond with mercy. When you are finished reading this little study Gem, below well be a study you can do to help you understand more about God’s mercy.

The publican also knew the Scriptures. However, he realizes his need, and pleads with God, in His Holy presence through prayer, for His loving mercy. It was through studying the Scriptures in a relationship with God, the publican understood his great need, and embraced the will of God.

We are to humble ourselves “in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift” us up. See James 4:10. Also in James 4:6 & 7, we are told that, “… God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Therefore, we are to submit ourselves “therefore to God.” We are called to, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to” us. Read James 4:8 and 9. The difference between the two men is that one read the scriptures in pride to see how great he himself was, as he did the things of the law given. This was not in a desire to do the Will of God, in a loving relationship with Him. The other studied to learn how great God is. In this he learns the loving tender mercies of God for the sinner of this world. He also learns his great need of God and pleads for mercy. Jesus said, “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other:” note Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42.

Jesus said, “… whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.  Matthew 23:12.
