A Peculiar People.

God’s children, His people, are called to be a Peculiar People. From the beginning of the Scriptures to the end, we read about God’s people were, and are, called to be different from the rest of the world.

We read about this in Titus where it explains that Jesus, “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:14.

The Old Testament was the same “For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.” Deuteronomy 14:2. “For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.” Psalms 135:4.

Where does God look to fine His peculiar people? God looks upon the heart, for God see’s things that man cannot see. We all know that what is in the heart, is what God looks upon, and what is in the heart, is eventually acted out by the actions of each human being.

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7.

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20.

“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” Exodus 19:5-6.

“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” Luke 6:27-28.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” 1 Peter 2:9.

When we are a peculiar people of God, we will not conform to the world. God’s people will obey the law of the land, yet without breaking God’s Law. Therefore, putting God’s Law first; above the law of the land, above man, and above our own desires. We are to faithfully pay our taxes as much as we are called to faithfully return our tithes and give offerings. Yet we do not follow anything that breaks God’s Law. God’s people have modesty, and a pure heart. Note Deuteronomy 22:5; 1 Timothy 2:9, 10. Nor will we act like the worldly in the things we do, eat and drink. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Proverbs 20:1. Note Leviticus chapter 11.

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s. Luke 20:25.

What makes these People different from the world? It is faith and trust in God, spending time with God in prayer and in His Word daily, and trusting God at His Word, believing, and following Him with all their heart mind and soul. Note Matthew 22:37.

1 Corinthians 13 explains that we can do the works of what is required of us, yet without Love, that is, without God, we are nothing. Verse 2. Read this link https://openthelightstudies.com/2023/08/23/1-corinthians-13/ which explains this in detail.

What is the flesh really like? “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:22-26.

Therefore, … “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8.

“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” Colossians 3:12-14. We can only, truly, have these fruits within us through Christ Jesus, in whom the Spirit of God comes to us, and works within our heart. Note John 7:37-39; chapters 14 & 15; 20:22, 31; Acts2:38; 19:1-6; the Book of Romans; Galatians 3:14; 4:7; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 John 5:6.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15. God’s Commandments will be in the depth of the hearts of His Peculiar People.

Exodus

20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
20:6 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
20:13 Thou shalt not kill.
20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
20:15 Thou shalt not steal.
20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.  … For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: …  Psalm 1:1-3, 6.

“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:16-18.

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8.

Desire to be God’s peculiar people. Pray, asking God, in Jesus name, to fill our hearts with His Holy Spirit, that He will mould and shape us to a peculiar people on earth, ready for the Kingdom of God.

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” Jude 1:24-25.
